Writers shouldn’t be afraid of long sentences.
One long sentence
In the summer between high school and college, when I sold kitchen knives from a catalog, convincing myself they were the best knives at any price, I failed to convince anyone else to buy even one, except my mom, who bought a jackknife for my dad’s birthday, which I took out of the package when it arrived (even though I was in the passenger seat as my mom drove me to the airport for a church missions trip to Mexico) and opened to demonstrate the safety locking mechanism, and immediately cut my palm, which might be why I spent the next summer at a more regular teenage job, selling donuts.
Here’s a version of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” that makes me twitch: they skip a beat in the chorus, giving it a 7/8 time signature.
